I was honored when Luke Hodsdon, the Director of Design at Churm Media, hired me sight unseen after a phone interview, before I had even left Chicago in 2010. He called to offer me the job as I was driving through Iowa, on my way to begin a new chapter in California.
As the Art Director of the Family brands, I got to dive deep into an existing identity and completely redesign the publication’s brand voice. I wanted to bring the slightly-dated design sensibility and identity up to present times and connect with contemporary families in the Orange County area without losing the deep roots of a well-established brand. I focused on finding vibrant and current imagery combined with clean, crisp typography and layouts. I was also able to work closely with local photographers to art direct some really amazing cover shots/stories.
I also had the opportunity to create and produce an entirely new editorial section, CraftTime. I devised a monthly craft project, wrote the article, and both starred in and edited a corresponding video tutorial.
